My goal for the year is 4 half marathons, and I have one under my fuel belt already, Myrtle Beach. Rich and I debated doing one in Atlanta at the end of March, but it would wind up being a pretty expensive weekend because the registration is $75 each, plus a couple hundred dollars for boarding 4 dogs for a weekend. We do have a friend in Atlanta that we could stay with so we wouldn't have to find a hotel. The boxer rescue would reimburse us for Emmy's boarding if we still have her then, but I know there are always so many needs for money in the rescue and I hate to take any for boarding so we usually end up paying for it ourselves. So...we may still decide last minute to drive to Atlanta for this one, but more than likely not.
I was super excited to meet (online, not in person yet) fellow local blogging runner Kristin who is training for her first marathon, the North Carolina Marathon on May 2nd. I think we are going to sign up for the half at this one. It looks like it is a smaller race, and benefits the foster home system which of course I am all for in humans as well as doggies. That gives us 56 days starting today to train. It is probably quite a bit hillier than Myrtle was, so there will definitely be lots of hill training in our future. Rich and I are going to talk after work tonight and make a final decision on it. I'll keep you posted!

there's a half in charlotte in mid april (charlotte racefest). still would require traveling and probably dog-boarding though, but registration is less ($45) and maybe you also have friends in charlotte? i wish sc had more races!!
Under your fuel belt - lol!
Sounds like a good choice. It's always a bonus when the cause means something to you.
i lol'd at the 'under the fuel belt' too. good luck with your choice! :)
i thought about nc marathon too, but i don't like high point very much. i lived in greensboro about 10 years ago and hated it.
i'm doing the Greer half marathon april 25th, that would also be a good one for you to consider.

is the page for the half race. it's put on by the greenville track club. it is a smaller race, maybe 500 people. But greer is one of the flatter places around greenville, so it should be a good course.
oh, and the earth day greer half is only $35 if you reg before april 7th. cool!
Yay, I am excited you will be at that race! I, like Carolina John, hate High Point as well and was extremely pissed when they moved the race from Greensboro to HP earlier this year. My dad lives in Greensboro, almost right on the former course! Ugh.
So I run at the Mt. P track off Houston Northcutt (right next to the police station). It's super safe, lighted, and there are usually a good bit of people there. And it's close to my work! Let's def get together to run next week sometime! I usually run after work (5:45 to 6ish) and can run anywhere. If you're a morning person I might can even drag myself out of bed...I live downtown but work in Mt. P. Email me to set it up! ChasRunner at gmail dot com.
Yeah and my friend who is running NC with me told me that the last 2 miles of the marathon is up hill.
Great.
I totally agree that boarding charges can make races so much more expensive, and I only have one puppy!
I'm catching up on your blog, and you're signed up for Hooray Spring!
choosing races is so fun!! but they can be expensive when travel is involved, esp boarding!! i know its pricey to board my 2 dogs, 4 would be a lot!!
Looks like a great choice! Enjoy the hill training. ;o)
4 halfs this year? Thats awesome. You ar epicking some good ones to do!
Sounds like you have a great plan.
We did the Georgia ING Marathon several years ago (the first year they had it).
