The Baby Name

We've had the name picked out for a couple months now, and I feel pretty confident that we're going to stick with it. I'll post it tomorrow, but today you get to see some of the names that didn't make the cut for one reason or another.

If you or someone you know/love/like/hate have any of these names, please do not be offended.

1. Audrey - I loved this one but I got some icky faces from friends about it, and one friend said that every Audrey she'd ever known had been really stuck up.

2. Isla - pronounced "Eye-luh" exactly why it ended up getting rejected, we didn't want to forever have to spell and/or tell people how to pronounce her name. I do truly think it's a beautiful name, and love the tropical, beachy vibe it has.

3. Emmeline - with Emmy as the nickname. I thought it was really cute, but truly I got the idea based on the boxer/pit bull foster dog we had named Emmy and I'm not sure I could live with naming our daughter after a dog. Plus, as much as I like the name Emma, it is insanely popular there right now so I was afraid it would blend in with all the Emmas too much.

3. Stella - this was actually our first choice and we almost stuck with it, but we found out some friends of ours were naming their baby girl, born a few months ago now, Stella. I still really like it, even with the associations of How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Stellllllllaaaaaaaa from A Streetcar Named Desire. I wanted Stella Caroline, as a tribute to our time in SC, but Rich loved Stella but not Caroline.

4. Mabel - yep we both liked old-ladyesque Mabel, but not quite enough to commit to it.

5. Clementine - I actually wanted Clementine as a middle name for Mabel, but when I suggested Mabel Clementine both Rich and one of my coworkers laughed and thought it was a joke.

I searched through so many websites and books looking for the right name, and while I liked a lot of them, none felt perfect...until The One. We wanted something that wasn't really popular (like anything on the Top 25 list for the year) but also something easy to spell and pronounce that wasn't extremely eccentric. So check back tomorrow to find out what Baby Girl Morris's name will be. Anyone have any guesses (and if you're on Facebook and have seen it, don't guess!). The initals for the first and middle name are:

L S

How how fun!! I have no idea what I'd guess for the first name, but is the middle name Shannon? LOL

Can't wait for the big reveal!

I love classic old lady names. I mean they've got to be grown ups. :)

how fun!! i was definitely saying "is-la" so probably better that you didn't pick that one if you didn't want to always be explaining/pronouncing. they're all pretty though.

clementine - i would've voted for that one :)

well if shannon is the 's' then the 'l' must be lindsay ;)

Those are all good. I like Stella, and had even thought of that for Norah. And I agree that having to pronounce and spell your child's name, in the case of Isla, is definitely grounds for dismissal.

Lily or Lilian. We just had a big convo at work about baby names. I sure do have a lot of names for not being big on the baby train. :p

Oh, I like Lilian. But my guess is Laurel. So pretty.

my kids ended up being Ella Marie and Lena Riley. but we've got some whoppers on the family tree.

my mother had an uncle named Land. Land? really? Land Conway Garrett? everyone called him LC, he was the fire chief of simpsonville SC for a long time.

can't wait to see what you picked out.

Mom also has an Aunt Bill. She just died a month after Lena was born at age 103. Because of that, Lena was almost named Billie Danger Flynn. And as it turns out, Danger should be her middle name. she sure lives up to it.

Booo.. I hate teasers! I'm so curious and impatient that I actually went to your Facebook page and tried to find the name. Didn't see it anywhere, so guess I'll check back tomorrow. Mabel Clementine? Seriously? Can you imagine the teenage fights you would get into over that one? ;)

Kinda glad you didn't go with "eye-luh" b/c then they'd run into the same issue I've had my whole life--Alisa is "uh-lease-uh" not Alissa or Alisha or Alicia--hehe.

Mabel and Clementine---kinda love those! My hubs and I can't agree on any names---good thing we're not in the market for a baby =).

I love Isla too. I wasn't sure how to pronounce it at first though ;)

Can't wait to hear what it is!

Yes, can't wait to find out the winning name! Your 'rejects' are all pretty good, so the final one must be a real keeper! Wasn't it a hard decision? We just about died trying to find the right name!

You are kidding me! I think you got ahold of my list while I was pregnant--except my husband shot down every. single. one of my picks. And I kid you not, Lucy, Susannah (I wanted to call her Sunny!) Isla, and Emmeline were in my top 10. You guys have great taste! I just love the name you picked out.
