12 week baby pics

Yesterday I had my first ultrasound as part of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Fetal Growth Study at 12w1d pregnant. It was SO neat! The little thing was in there just rolling from side to side and doing some Jazzercize moves but it's still too small for me to feel anything. I was really hoping we could find out the sex, but all they could tell us was that either it is a boy or a girl with the umbilical cord in the way making it look like a boy. So, we have to wait til the end of Dec or early Jan to find out.

They took some blood and asked lots of questions about my health, caffeine and alcohol intake and exercise/activity level. The study is just getting underway and will run for 2 years, then it should be the standard by which fetal growth in utero is measured. How cool is it that we get to be a part of that! The little one will get a onesie that says "I am the standard by which other babies are measured." I am excited to learn in a few years what they find out about exercise and nutrition and fetal development.

Enjoy the pics of my little scrawny, alien-looking offspring:

Profile pic

Totally looks like an alien, arms and legs crossed in front of body.

A little more stretched out. That huge head and big ears kinda freak me out a little.

Back view of the spine and hipbones. They are so bony at this point. Me? Not so bony and skinny!

Those pictures are so cool. Too bad you couldn't find out for sure the sex.

How cool that you're part of the study! Can't wait to see pictures of the little guy or gal-with-the-umbilical-cord-in-the-way in that onesie :)

The study sounds really interesting - what a neat thing to be a part of.

Awww...I love seeing the pics of your little peanut. And the "alienish" thoughts don't go away. I remember being what seemed like, oh, 2 years pregnant, feeling something moving around in my stomach, and thinking....there is an ALIEN in there! Or, what if it's really just a tumor and everyone thinks I'm pregnant? HA! preggo brain -- nothing like it! Hope you are feeling well!

Wow, how cool are those pictures!

hopefully you'll post the sex when you know!

If I'm ever pregnant, I'm not sure I will want to know. I'm weird like that.

great pics. it makes it feel so real to see that tiny little baby. at that age, it couldn't be much bigger than a french fry. we had ultrasound pics when the baby was the size of a grain of rice. that's the neat thing about doing IVF. tons of ultrasounds.

we didn't find out the sex until 20 weeks. still it would be nice if people could buy you christmas presents for the baby in blue or pink.

4d pics are great!

That's pretty cool! And 12 weeks is really early to find out the sex; most practices don't do it until closer to 20 weeks. Still, not too long until you can find out!

Very exciting! My ob did tons of ultrasounds and I have them in the baby album. You'll love that treasure later. Nice 3D ones as well!

Current day ultrasound pix do freak me out a little bit because they look so real. In my day, it looked like just a bunch of white dots on black, and we'd try to guess..."I think it's a finger, or a penis, or a foot." Nobody knew.
