Rainy day run-walk

Charleston has been pretty dreary this last week, almost makes me think I'm in the pacific northwest with the constant not-quite-rain dampness we've had going on. This week has been excellent in that I've worked out at least half an hour every day except Monday. After getting on the scale at the OB's office Monday and seeing that I'd gained 8lbs in the last month I had some serious motivation. Well, first off I truly didn't gain 8lbs in a month. I've gained about 7lbs in the last 3 months since getting pregnant based on my home scale which I use almost daily. The first weigh-in at the doctor was in gym shorts and flip flops, the 2nd was after a gluttonous Thanksgiving week and 18 straight hours in the car...can you say water retention?? Plus I had on jeans and size 11 Nikes which aren't exactly light as feathers. So even as she cautioned me "Well, we don't want to gain 8lbs every month" I just took it with a grain of salt knowing that it wasn't an accurate reflection of the weight I've actually gained. Especially as a few lbs came off over the next few days. I started this pregnancy at 160lbs, about 10 higher than my happy weight, and am now around 167...I'm cool with that.

This morning was our local Reindeer Run, and last year we ran it and had a blast. Rich and I were both off work, both got PRs, then fully enjoyed the free beer at the local brewery afterwards. Fastfoward to today....it's rainy, I have to work in the afternoon, I obviously can't make use of the free beer nor get a PR...so the Reindeer Run really didn't appeal to me, at least not enough to fork over the race fee. Instead we went for a 5 mile walk/jog over the Cooper River Bridge. It was pretty cold and windy on the bridge, but it was still a really enjoyable workout. I walked over half of it (the uphills) but still managed to feel like I was working hard by walking pretty fast. It was the longest distance I've covered in a few months, and I'm grateful to have some energy back to get some good workouts in.

Welcome to the second trimester--you'll have a lot more energy from here until about your last month. Take advantage of it!

I had a friend who had a similar experience with the doctor. There were all these unrelated factors for the 'weight gain' (heavy clothes, etc...), and then the doc made her feel bad. You'd think OBs would know better!

The weight gain only gets scary towards the end. When you're in those final 4-5 weeks, you'll see numbers on the scale that scare the bejesus out of you. But that's mostly the baby's weight, so it'll come off fairly easily.

Nice job on the 5 mile run/walk!

maybe next year you'll be running that race, getting your PR pushing your little one in a jogging stroller all bundled up! :D You're doing awesome, keep it up!

I'd take that doctor's weigh in with a grain of salt too! You know what you weigh so I wouldn't worry about it!

Great job getting out there despite the icky weather. I think it's amazing that you're still getting in some workouts. Keep it up!
