Pregnant Running and November Goals

Pop Quiz:
Pregnant running is
a. hard
b. extra tiring
c. slow
d. rewarding
e. good for mom and baby
g. helpful for burning off Halloween candy
f. all of the above

And of course the answer is, f, all of the above. I am lucky to have a doctor who fully supports exercise in pregnancy and I've been given the go ahead to run, lift weights, bike, etc. Her only guidelines were to be smart about it and to listen to my body, which I can handle. Over the past 2 months I've kept running but it has been short and slow. Most runs are just 2 miles and I usually run them at about an 11:30-11:45 pace. It's like my body just won't move any faster. I've decided to start doing "long runs" on the weekend building up to 6 miles or so and hopefully continue that as far along in the pregnancy as I'm physically able. I may or may not be planning on diving headfirst into marathon training next summer once the little dude or dudette is here:)
My long run, don't laugh...it felt long to me, was 3.5 miles. Yeah, I know...lame, but it's the longest I've run since like early September. It felt great!!

November Goals:
1. Run every single day of the month-a minimum of half a mile. This is more of a mental exercise than anything, to conquer getting out there for even just a few minutes when I don't feel like.
2. Weight train 2 days a week
3. Yoga at least once a week

Happy November! (I turn 30 later this month!!)

GAH I'm so far behind on reading blogs!! CONGRATULATIONS on the pregnancy!! I was only able to run up to 20 weeks with my last pregnancy, but it STILL made the world of difference! Good for you for keeping up with it (and having a supportive doc!)

I just got back into the running groove and boy do I feel so much better! I also did my "long" run this morning of 3.5 miles and couldn't believe those used to be easy.

I hope to run at least a half next fall. I have a new due date of May 31st!

I just stumbled upon your blog. Good luck on your quest to run while pregnant! I didn't run a whole lot my first trimester because I was sooo tired, but I trained for a half marathon that I was going to run at 5.5 mos preggo, but on the 10 miler the weekend before my ligaments killed me so I opted out of the half. I made it running to 33 weeks with my pregnancy. I really missed it when I couldn't run, and am finally back into it postpartum--still really slow but its sooo good to be out there and doing it! Can't wait till spring to bust out the BOB revolution with my little guy in tow!

Yay for running mommies!! I'm so impressed. seriously. So I once ran in a group with a woman who told me this, "I didn't run during my first two pregnancies, but I did on my third - and it was the smoothest delivery of all of them." Ok, paraphrasing, but you get it. She swore running was the difference.

Good luck with this girl. I'm excited to follow you through it!

And, it will get slower and harder, but I know I was glad I ran during my pregnancy. Even though I don't think it made any difference in labor and delivery, I know that it helped keep my weight gain to a minimum, and it just plain made me feel good.

I have no advice because when I was pregnant, I did nothing, but wish (now) that I would have.

You're just smart to do what feels right and to listen to your body.

3.5 miles is a good run. Pregnant or not.

I worked out throughout my second pregnancy, & it was a super-fast labor with quick recovery. It definitely helps!

Congrats on the 3.5 :) I think it's awesome that you're running through the pregnancy, regardless of how far you go - and I love the goal to run daily in November!

stick with it, running as far into the pregnancy as you feel comfortable will pay dividends later on down the road.

Hee hee. My long run this week was 4 miles, and I felt like that was an accomplishment.

I love to hear that you are still working out! I think it's so great when women can do that when they are pregnant :)

Sound like good goals. I didn't run with either of my pregnancies so I'm totally impressed with those of you who do. Keep up the great work!

I am always so in awe of pregnant women who run. There is one in particular that I see often, she glows as she bounds along.

Keep it up! You'll be building a little runner =).
